For online retailer, Wordery, I wrote a piece about how an A to Z inspired my writing of The Ends of the Earth.

Here’s the opening:

I am not a natural big city dweller - this much was obvious to everyone I knew when I first moved to London. Not least my Mum who, when she dropped me at the door of my first, grotty flatshare, presented me with a pocket A to Z of the city. Ungratefully, I scoffed. What use was a paper map in the digital age? There was Google Maps, CityMapper, Waze and a whole host of other navigational apps that wouldn’t add to the weight of my handbag. Better yet, they updated in real time. Although no expert, I was sure that London in 2015 had moved on somewhat since the 1985 publication date of the relic in question, a hand-me-down from my mother’s own time as a Londoner.
